Grim scenes from the Mercury News

After watching the newsroom at the San Jose Mercury News dwindle from 420 to 170 people through six rounds of layoffs and buyouts since 2001, I have plenty to say about the state of newspapers and what’s gone wrong. But mostly these days, I’m trying not to dwell on in. Instead, I’ve been trying to think a lot this past year about what comes next.

That said, I’m compelled to point out a haunting photo essay by one of my co-workers, Martin Gee. He posted 47 photos on Flickr under the title of “Reduction in Force.” This week, Mother Jones magazine picked up some of the photos and published them as a photo essay called “The Dying Newsroom.”

Even as we try to move forward, it’s important to recognize at times what’s been lost. And Martin captures that sense of loss.
